We want to ensure that our residents’ daily life at Verulam House is as enjoyable and fulfilling as possible.

Verulam House is full of charm and character. From the beautiful, historic house to the cosy and comfortable rooms it is a place to relax and feel at home, safe in the knowledge you or your family member will receive the highest quality of care.

We provide person-centered care and focus on maintaining residents’ daily routines, enabling them – as far as possible – to live as they did at home. Our professional and highly trained team gets to know each resident as an individual and care plans are developed with each person’s input, to ensure it is tailored to their precise needs. We have a very low turnover of staff with many of the care team working for us for many years, fostering a stable and caring environment.

Activities are tailored to our residents’ interests and range from shopping trips and visits to local attractions through to music therapy and sherry mornings for those who prefer to stay closer to home. Our extensive gardens provide plenty to keep our keen gardeners occupied as well as lovely spaces for residents to sit outside and enjoy the view and fresh air.

We are very centrally located, St Albans city centre is five minutes’ walk away and we have easy access to the motorway and public transport, making it easy for guests to visit – they are always welcome.

Activities

We have a rich schedule of activities at Verulam House with enough variety to appeal to all interests and tastes. Our in-house activities range from arts and crafts and chair yoga to movie nights and “night owls” for those who prefer staying up later. We have a thriving gardening club where residents tend to the garden and help grow flowers and herbs for the home.

We have a dedicated activities room with plenty of space to incorporate all activities. It is large enough to host parties and functions with all our residents and provides a great venue for visiting entertainers and singers.

We have strong links with the local community and children from local schools regularly come in to visit. The city centre is easily accessible, and our residents can travel in to St Albans for shopping or sightseeing, or even join local groups such as knitting and social clubs.

Residents also look forward to the home’s regular visits from the hairdresser, chiropodist, optician, and reflexologist.

Food

Residents have a choice of two freshly cooked meals daily, using ingredients sourced locally.

Main meals include favourites such as home cooked chicken, bacon and leek pie and beef goulash, as well as fish and vegetarian options which are also available each day. All special dietary requirements and personal requests are catered to.

Our meals are served either in our bright and attractive dining room or The Chapel Restaurant. Residents who may prefer a quieter mealtime can be served their food in their rooms. Snacks and drinks are provided throughout the day.

Facilities

After a rich and varied history, Verulam House was carefully refurbished into a care home in 1996. The home has 46 rooms, of which 44 have ensuite bathrooms.

There is lift access to all floors and residents can spend their time in two beautiful lounges. One overlooks the gardens and the other is primarily used as a TV and video room for residents.

There is a separate activities room where residents socialise and pursue their hobbies and take part in the home’s activities. The beautiful garden is landscaped with patio and seating areas.

Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms with their belongings, and can even bring small pets to create a sense of home.

Team

Verulam House is proud to have a dedicated and loyal team of staff, many of whom have been working at the home for many years. This long-standing commitment fosters a stable and caring environment, where residents feel secure and well-supported by familiar, kindly faces.

The manager, who has been with the home for an impressive 28 years, brings a wealth of experience and continuity, ensuring that these high standards of care are consistently upheld.

This close-knit, experienced team is at the heart of the home, providing compassionate care and building strong, lasting relationships with residents and their families.
